DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us for Bloustein Studio Day\, an opportunity to engage with and reflect on planning practice as Bloustein students present real-world work they have been developing all semester in partnership with government agencies\, nonprofits\, and community organizations across New Jersey. \nThis year’s seven studio presentations span some of today’s most pressing planning challenges from Complete Streets and active transportation in Linwood\, to affordable housing and public health\, to climate resilience and municipal land use planning. Our graduate students have worked with clients including Hudson County’s Division of Planning\, the NJ Bike and Walk Coalition\, the NJ Hospital Association\, and the Montclair Center BID\, among others. \nThe event will also feature an expert panel of distinguished planning practitioners and Bloustein alumni including Christiana Foglio\, DC’84\, MCRP ’86 (Community Investment Strategies)\, Eric Enderlin\, MCRP ’98 (NYC Housing Development Corporation)\, Leigh Ann Von Hagen ’93 (Alan M. DESCRIPTION:We invite undergraduate students at Rutgers University–New Brunswick to participated in the 8th Annual Case Competition\, presented by the Future Healthcare Administrators. It will be held on Sunday\, April 19th from 9AM to 5PM. Open to all schools\, majors\, and years. \nTeams of 3-4 students can apply to compete. All team members must be undergraduate students enrolled at universities located within the United States. All members of a team must be students from the same college/university. \nWant to compete but don’t have a team? Fill out the form and select “Open to more team members!” \nThis is a wonderful opportunity to showcase your problem-solving skills by outlining a solution for the provided hospital case and presenting it to our judges. \nThe event will be followed by a networking session with prospective employers to learn more about their companies. SUMMARY:Inside the Black Box: Mapping Neighborhood Boundaries in a Muslim Informal Settlement. Case of Jamia Nagar\, Delhi\, India
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Zehra Mahdi\, Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellow at the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy and doctoral candidate at the Department of Architecture and Regional Planning\, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)\, Kharagpur\, India. Her doctoral research focuses on neighborhood change in informal settlements in Delhi\, India that are predominantly inhabited by the Muslim community and influenced by the presence of anchor institutions. \nMuslim spaces in India are often characterized by a socio-spatial bundle of attributes enmeshed in planning informalities. They are frequently viewed through a lens of opaqueness and homogeneity by the State\, planners\, policy-makers\, and other residents. Such a generalization of space leads to stigmatization and uneven distribution of State resources. This talk illustrates the internal heterogeneity and dynamics of socio-spatial organization within Muslim spaces. It examines how residents define their neighborhoods by evoking spatial and non-spatial variables of distinctions\, and how their perception and delineation of neighborhoods differ based on their positionality. It then provides a method to reach consensus from multiple\, overlapping boundaries to operational neighborhood units. It is an attempt to move beyond the binaries of formal-informal\, religious\, and ethnic groups as black-box typifications in urban spaces\, and to counter map admin-political boundaries ‘from below’ by accounting for residents’ sensibilities\, agency\, and consensus.

SUMMARY:Bloustein School Welcome Back Picnic
DESCRIPTION:All Bloustein School students\, PhD candidates\, faculty\, staff\, and instructors are invited to attend the 2024 welcome back picnic. Food choices to include: Hamburgers\, hot dogs\, veggie burgers\, “boardwalk style” sausage & pepper hoagies\, corn on the cob\, baked beans\, potato salad\, cole slaw\, pasta salad\, tossed salad with assorted dressings. Watermelon\, cookies\, and ice cream novelties for dessert. \nAll food is served on a first come\, first served basis. Food service will begin at APPROXIMATELY 11:45 a.m. and will continue until it’s all gone. \nNO RSVP NEEDED. Please be courteous to our food prep staff while they are working. \nThis event is rain or shine. In the event of rain\, food will be moved to the building’s main lobby.
