Soumitra S. Bhuyan, Ph.D., M.P.H., Executive Director of the Health Administration Programs, Founding Director of the Rutgers Doctor of Health Administration Program, and Associate Professor at the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, has received the 2026 Excellence in Teaching Award from the Academy of Management’s Health Care Management Division.
The national award recognizes outstanding, innovative, and inspiring teaching in healthcare management and health administration. Established in 2005, the award is presented annually to a faculty member selected from nominations submitted by members of the Health Care Management Division and the broader healthcare management and health administration community.
The award recognizes Bhuyan’s commitment to creating meaningful learning experiences, mentoring students, and preparing future healthcare leaders to address the complex organizational, technological, policy, and population health challenges facing healthcare systems.
“Receiving this national recognition is especially meaningful to me,” Bhuyan said. “I view it not only as an individual honor, but also as a reflection of the growing visibility, quality, and impact of our Health Administration programs and our collective commitment to educating, mentoring, and supporting our students.”
Bhuyan provides academic and strategic leadership for the Bloustein School’s Health Administration programs, including its nationally ranked Master of Health Administration program, currently ranked No. 26 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. He previously served as the founding director of the Rutgers Doctor of Health Administration Program, helping establish its practice-focused curriculum for experienced healthcare professionals.
His teaching emphasizes the connection between academic knowledge and real-world healthcare leadership. Through applied learning, mentorship, collaboration, and engagement with healthcare professionals, Bhuyan works to prepare students to navigate a rapidly changing healthcare environment and contribute meaningfully to the organizations and communities they serve.
“Teaching is a lifelong pursuit,” Bhuyan said. “I continue to learn from my colleagues and students through their scholarship, professional experience, collaboration, and dedication. I am deeply grateful to our faculty, staff, students, alumni, and professional partners for their continued support and commitment to the success of our programs.”
This recognition from the Academy of Management’s Health Care Management Division highlights Bhuyan’s contributions as an educator and the growing national visibility and impact of the Bloustein School’s Health Administration programs.
