New initiative targets N.J.'s long term, older jobless

A coalition of academics, business groups and non-profit organizations launched a $1 million initiative Tuesday to help the more than 100,000 New Jersey workers who have been without a job for more than six months – about half of whom are aged 45 and over.

The initiative, New Start Career Network, aims to provide advice and connections to help hard-core, older unemployed workers overcome the emotional, financial and occupational problems that can dog them after months of rejection and joblessness, and retool them for the job market, the coalition said.
