Rising Tides – Tackling Housing & Resilience in New Jersey’s Meadowlands

Meadowlands Studio 2023

View StoryMap

The New Jersey Meadowlands District is an ecologically sensitive and economically valuable location in North Jersey, located opposite the Hudson River from New York City. With increasing demands for affordable housing in the area, as well as interventions for avoiding climate-related damages, placement of new housing development must be well-planned and thought out.

This project aims to analyze these issues through the framework of WHERE and HOW to develop potential new affordable housing.

  1. Affordable Housing (WHERE): locate suitable sites for the accommodation of affordable housing, including consideration of potential sea level rise impacts and environmental justice concerns.
    1. Updates and suggestions for transportation networks
    2. Resource support for increased density: Identify and discuss concerns regarding how increased density may strain already limited resources. These concerns will be addressed to ensure areas chosen for housing development are suitable for growth
  2. Climate Change Resiliency (HOW): In addition to ensuring the first listed goal are achieved using sustainable practices, we will outline specific objectives to ensure the natural and built environment is adapted to confirm resilience throughout the region.
    1. Definition for resiliency: “New Jersey defines “climate resilience” as the ability of social and ecological systems to absorb and adapt to shocks and stresses resulting from a changing climate, while becoming better positioned to respond in the future.” (New Jersey Municipal Climate Resilience Planning Guide, May 2022). We aim to address flood resiliency and nature-based solutions/green infrastructure.
    2. Updates and suggestions for transportation networks
    3. Resource support for increased density: Identify and discuss concerns regarding how increased density may strain already limited resources. These concerns will be addressed to ensure areas chosen for housing development are suitable for growth
