After gaining his EMT certification in his senior year of high school, Sergio knew he wanted to pursue a healthcare career.

“I began my career as a first responder and enjoyed practicing patient care, but I realized during the pandemic that I wanted a different path,” he said. “I love patient care. But COVID-19 shed light on our healthcare system’s gaps and shortcomings – especially in the administration and management of workforce and resources.”

As a natural leader, Sergio saw the opportunity where he could make a difference. He continued, “Quality patient care cannot be provided without adequate resources. As a provider, I can only treat one patient at a time. As an administrator, I can ensure that entire communities have access to quality care.”

After completing his first year in the Rutgers MHA program, he joined Morristown Medical Center (MMC) as a as a summer Administrative Intern. In his role at the flagship organization of the Atlantic Health System, he glimpsed the many post-graduate opportunities that were available.

“During my 10-week internship, I acted as though I were in a fellowship role. I met as many leaders as I could and volunteered on as many projects as I was able. At the end of the summer, I was offered the opportunity to stay as the Administrative Resident,” he said.  “I remained there throughout the fall semester and continued to work on the projects I had become involved with.”

“In December,” he said proudly, “I was hired full-time as a Senior Financial Analyst.”

Sergio chose the Rutgers MHA program not only because it was close to home, but also because it is close to key players in the healthcare industry. “Rutgers’ location places students at the doorstep of incredible opportunities. The MHA program also has great professors with invaluable knowledge, experience, and connections in their fields.”

He considers himself fortunate to have been offered a full-time position at MMC while continuing his education. “Every professor I have had in the MHA program has shared invaluable insight into the intricate and interconnected world of healthcare administration. Their knowledge and advice have shaped my trajectory as an early careerist. Without lessons on everything from law and ethics to leadership, I would not be in the full-time position I am in now.”

“The Rutgers MHA program is building leaders that will drive the future of healthcare – if you want to be at the frontlines of advancement, this is the place for you.”
