Bloustein's graduate program in urban planning moves up to #5 in 2017 Planetizen rankings

June 16, 2017

The 2017 edition of the Planetizen Guide to Graduate Urban Planning Programs has ranked the Bloustein School’s Program in Urban Planning and Policy Development 5th among the Top 25 graduate urban planning programs.

For the fourth straight release, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology occupies the top spot in the rankings. In 2017, the Bloustein School moved up from its previous ranking of 6th (2015). Planetizen’s ranking system is based on a combination of statistical data collected from each graduate program, and opinion data gathered from planning educators. Eighty-one of 96 programs and 1,115 planning educators participated in the survey this year.

In addition to the overall ranking, the Bloustein School was ranked

  • #1 in programs allowing part-time study;
  • #2 in the Northeast region (26 schools total);
  • #6 for the number of international students; and
  • #9 according to educators surveyed;

The Bloustein School also boasts the third largest program, by enrollment, and has graduated the most alumni in the last 10 years.

After completing a large-scale data collection effort during the winter and spring, 2016-17, Planetizen worked with statistical consultant Thomas Tseng, principal of Sengo Insights, LLC, to produce the Guide’s rankings. Throughout the process, Planetizen consulted with a special committee of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning to ensure that the 5th Edition met the highest standards of data collection and analysis.
