N.J. Senate President Sweeney lost his seat in a shocker. Will he run for governor in 4 years?

November 17, 2021

The 3rd district Senate seat will be up in two years, when all 120 spots in the Legislature will be on the ballot again. Sweeney didn’t close the door Wednesday on possibly running to regain it.

Julia Sass Rubin, a professor at the Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University, suggested it’s possible Sweeney could seek to regain his seat. She said that’s especially viable because he will still have a seat on the commission charged with rewriting New Jersey’s legislative districts before the 2023 elections.

“I see many paths for him to make a comeback,” Sass Rubin said. “I think this was perhaps an unusual year. And he will have a role deciding what district looks like. So much will depend on what happens in the next two years.”
