Have you met Newark? Bloustein alumnus gives tours of the city, disputes Newark’s “most unfriendly” status

September 27, 2013

haveyoumetnewarkHave you been to Newark recently? Bloustein alumnus Emily Manz MCRP ’13, who lives in the Ironbound section and works for Brick City Development Corp., never experienced Newark until long-time residents took her on a tour.

Now, she gives her own tours of the city, its neighborhoods, and challenges and successes it faces. Her next tour is taking place (please note date change!) Saturday, October 5, 10:30a.m.-1:30 p.m. Join the tour and find out more about her tours by visiting her website, Have You Met Newark?

Earlier this summer, Newark, NJ was named the most unfriendly city in the world by Conde Nast Traveler magazine. In rebuttal, Manz and fellow Newark resident Gizelle Clemens launched a Tumblr feed to disprove the survey.Themostunfriendlycityintheworld.tumblr.com encourages Newark residents to show the world how friendly the city is by emailing photos to them showing friendly people, places and spaces in the city. “The people we interact with day in and day out in Newark are some of the friendliest, most caring, interesting people in the world!” they state on the page. Since early August, more than 100 photos of friendly Newarkers have smiled and displayed signs to prove just how friendly the city is.

Newark residents and visitors are also encouraged to Tweet or Instagram friendly photos with the hashtag #unfriendlynewark.
