JPER Writing Workshop to be held at Rutgers, July 20-22

The editors of the Journal of Planning Education and Research (JPER) will host the annual JPER Writing Workshop for New Scholars on July 20-22, 2016, at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick, NJ.

The goal of this workshop is to improve the quality of written scholarship among new faculty of planning and related academic programs. The workshop is intended for recent Ph.D. recipients (or candidates graduating in Spring 2016) in urban planning, urban studies, and closely related fields. Untenured assistant professors also are eligible to participate.  Applications are due by March 1, 2016.  Download the flyer for additional information.

The program will include sessions on the writing and publication process, with intensive small-group work on participants’ own manuscripts. Selected participants are required to submit an article-length paper (about 30 double-spaced pages) by April 25, 2016. The paper will go through a mock peer review process by three referees. These reviews and additional feedback from faculty and fellow participants will be the basis for small-group discussions during the workshop. We will notify applicants who have been accepted for the workshop by March 15, 2016. Detailed information about accommodations will be provided at that time. Up to 20 applicants will be selected.

4. A letter of recommendation from a department chair or dissertation advisor

There is no registration fee for participants. Participants are responsible for travel to/from New Brunswick, NJ. Overnight accommodations (for July 20 and 21) will be provided at the Hyatt Regency, New Brunswick, NJ. Breakfast (July 21 and 22), lunch (July 21 and 22), and an evening social event (July 20) are provided by JPER. Dinner on July 21 is on your own. Those participants who wish to have a single room must make specific arrangements with the hotel, and will be responsible for the incremental cost above that of sharing a room. All participants are expected to arrive at the workshop venue by 2PM on July 20 and stay until the conclusion at 1PM on July 22.

Bloustein School professors Clinton Andrews and Frank Popper, and senior research associate Karen Lowrie, will became the new executive editors of the Journal of Planning Education and Research in January 2016. JPER is published quarterly by Sage Publications in association with the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning; it is a forum for planning educators and scholars, from both academe and practice, to present results from teaching and research that advance the profession and improve planning practice.
