Soumitra Bhuyan accepted into prestigious CAHME Accreditation Fellowship Program

November 4, 2020

Soumitra Bhuyan, Ph.D., M.P.H., assistant professor at the Bloustein School, was accepted to the accreditation fellowship program of the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME). The program is designed for individuals with the potential to make significant contributions to health services administration education.

CAHME is an interdisciplinary group of educational, professional, clinical, and other health sector organizations devoted to quality improvement of education for health care management and administration professionals. It is the only organization recognized to grant accreditation to individual academic programs offering a professional master’s degree in health care management education and is recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation.

“The CAHME fellowship is a wonderful opportunity to work with some of the best healthcare management educators and practitioners in the country. The U.S. healthcare system is undergoing significant changes; so do how we train the next generation of healthcare administrators?” said Dr. Bhuyan. “This fellowship will help me to understand the CAHME accreditation process for the MHA programs and associated activities. I hope to bring some of the best practices to the Rutgers MHA program.”

A member of the Bloustein School’s Master of Health Administration program, his teaching and research interests include chronic disease management, health information systems with an overarching emphasis on population health. He has received several awards from national organizations including the American Public Health Association (APHA) and Academy Health for his research and leadership activities. Also, an associate editor of the BMJ Global Health, he was the 2013 recipient of APHA’s “Rising Star” award, which recognizes the outstanding potential in the field of health administration and public health practice. In 2017, Dr. Bhuyan and colleagues received the 2017 Charles E. Gibbs Leadership Prize for their research in women’s health issues, which is awarded annually to recognize excellence in research on women’s health care or policy. Dr. Bhuyan also coaches the Rutgers MHA team for various regional and national case competitions.

CAHME’s accreditation fellowship program began in 1972 with the support of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Fellows play a critical role in the accreditation process for health care management degree programs. Criteria for being selected for the program include a demonstrated interest in higher education accreditation; ability to contribute to CAHME activities; and the potential to contribute to the field of health care management.
