Fierce competition gives Bloustein School team 3rd-place finish at 2021 Seton Hall/HPMSNJ Graduate Healthcare Management Case Study Challenge

December 22, 2021

A Bloustein School Master of Health Administration student team recently placed third at the Seton Hall Graduate Healthcare Management Case Study Challenge held the first week of November.

Jointly organized by the Healthcare Planning and Marketing Society of New Jersey, Seton Hall University, and the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME), the competition provided health administration graduate students from the New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania region the opportunity to present innovative solutions to a healthcare case.

The Rutgers MHA team, which competed against programs from the region including nationally-ranked Columbia University, the University of Pittsburgh and Penn State University, included Naren Gopal , Ananya Maganti, Edgar Romero, and Rajisha Shah . Bloustein School assistant professor Soumitra Bhuyan, Ph.D., served as team adviser.

“The competition was fierce! We were given a case about two weeks before the event, and had to come up with a laser-focused solution. The team dynamics were amazing and with the unparalleled guidance of our coach, Professor Bhuyan, it was a great learning experience,” the team said. “We met frequently to brainstorm strategies for the case and come up with good visuals for our presentation. All our strategies were second to none with a well-defined marketing and financial forecast as the backbone. Case competitions are a great way to apply what we learn in real-world scenarios.”

The judging panel consisted of executive leadership from diverse backgrounds, so the students knew the quality of their work had to be exceptional. Aakanksha Deoli MHA ’21 and a member of the Bloustein team that won the 2019 Seton Hall Case Challenge was also able to share her experiences and insights with the team.

“The Rutgers MHA faculty are happy to see our students are consistently being competitive and doing well in the healthcare management case competitions,” said assistant professor Soumitra Bhuyan, PhD, who also serves as coach of the Bloustein School case competition teams. “These results reflect the quality of our program.”

Members of the Bloustein team ranged from clinical as well as administrative backgrounds, so each member of the team brought different perspectives to the table. “By dividing up the work and helping each other through the process, we were able to really enhance our team-building skills. What also made us stand out was our presentation skills. Professor Bhuyan took the extra mile to mentor us in that area. The knowledge we gained through the competition will certainly help us in our professional journeys ahead.”
