Popper, Buffalo Commons featured in Harper's magazine cover story

Wil S. Hylton’s “Broken heartland:The looming collapse of agriculture on the Great Plains (story archive),” the cover story of the July 2012 issue of Harper’s magazine, makes extensive use of Frank and Deborah Popper‘s 1987 concept of the Buffalo Commons as the land-use future for much of the region. The story details how the Poppers’ initial idea of returning the Great Plains to its natural state has become central to the Midwest’s agricultural decline.
