EJB policy students assist at 2012 APPAM conference

Earlier this month, three Bloustein School policy students were among five chosen to assist with the communications efforts at the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management (APPAM) 2012 conference in Baltimore. The students were Shreya Barot, Katherine Centore, and Claire Phelan. Read more about them below. Congratulations to each!

Shreya Barot

Shreya Barot is in her first year of the master’s program at Rutgers University Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy (class of 2014) and is also a Survey Interviewer at Mathematica Policy Research. Ms. Barot recently worked on two projects for Mathematica: Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer for Children, and the National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services. Ms. Barot has also interned at the American Sustainable Business Council and NJAfter3.

Ms. Barot is interested in education policy with a concentration in elementary and secondary education. She hopes to apply her education and experience towards a successful career and help make a difference in the community.

Katherine Centore

Katherine Centore is currently pursuing a Master’s of Public Policy at Rutgers University Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy in the areas of education and international social policy. Ms. Centore has professional finance experience managing budgets, creating cash flow analyses, writing grant proposals, and project plan implementation.

Education Pioneers selected Ms. Centore as one of their summer 2012 Graduate School Fellows, where she combined her passion for education and social policy with her experience in business management. She assisted E3: Excellent Education for Everyone in creating a strategic business plan for CERN: Community Education Resource Network to become a leading accredited alternative education program in New Jersey. Ms. Centore recently founded a policy focused student advocacy group, Student Public Interest Network (SPIN) at Rutgers and currently serves as the Vice President of Public Policy for the Rutgers Association for Planning and Policy Students.

Claire Phelan

Claire Phelan graduated from Bard College in 2011, where she majored in Human Rights and completed a thesis on education policy. She is currently a first year MPP candidate at Rutgers University Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, where she is concentrating on Social Policy and Women’s Issues. Ms. Phelan is especially interested in policy issues affecting youth; her primary academic focus is currently access to comprehensive health and wellness education.

Outside of the classroom, Ms. Phelan runs a healthy cooking blog called Elegant Eating and volunteers as a youth sex educator at Scarleteen.com. Follow Claire on Twitter.
