The Heldrich Conversations Series presents Carl Van Horn, Herb Schaffner for discussion of Working Scared, April 3

March 20, 2013

Working Scared (Or Not at All) by Carl Van HornFor over 15 years, the Heldrich Center for Workforce Development has been documenting the views, opinions, and experiences of workers and employers through the Center’s critically acclaimed Work Trends survey series. To date, over 25,000 Americans from across the nation have been interviewed as part of this project.

On Wednesday, April 3 at 4:00 p.m. the Heldrich Center will host a provocative conversation between Dr. Carl Van Horn, author of the new book Working Scared (Or Not at All): The Lost Decade, Great Recession, and Restoring the Shattered American Dream and Herb Schaffner, Founder of Big Fish Media, about Working Scared and its findings and recommendations. The conversation between Dr. Van Horn and Mr. Schaffner will be followed by a question-and-answer session with the audience and a book signing for Working Scared. Copies of the book will be available for purchase during the event.

The book, released in March and published by Rowman and Littlefield, utilizes the series’ findings to present a compelling narrative of the transformations that have been sweeping America in recent years. The book explores the devastating consequences of the Great Recession, the forces that have reshaped the American labor market and their impact, the difficulties faced by older workers and high school and college graduates, and the way that the nation’s policymakers have responded to the Great Recession. The book also suggests reforms that are necessary to restore the American dream of stable employment and intergenerational progress.

Former New York Times columnist Bob Herbert commented, “Working Scared is the most compelling analysis yet of the biggest challenge facing America — its vast army of jobless and underemployed men and women. Van Horn’s insights are masterful and the stories are deeply moving.”

There is no charge for attending this event but seating is limited and registration is required. Please register by Friday, March 29, 2013.
