Bloustein graduate student Kate Millsaps awarded APA Sustainable Communities Division student essay award

April 6, 2016

Kate Millsaps, a dual M.C.R.P./M.P.P. candidate at the Bloustein School, has been selected as the first graduate student winner of the American Planning Association’s Sustainable Communities Division Student Essay Contest. Ms. Millsaps’ essay, written as part of Dr. Frank Popper’s class History and Theory of Planning, addressed equity as part of green space creation in post industrial areas.

The contest aims to recognize and foster the academic excellence of university students pursuing studies in fields related to sustainable community planning. One undergraduate student and one graduate student each received an award of $250 for essays on any subject that addressed items in the APA’s Comprehensive Plan Standards for Sustaining Places through a planning perspective.

The award was presented at the division’s 3rd Annual Excellence in Sustainability Awards on Sunday, April 3 at a reception at the APA National Conference in Phoenix, AZ.
