Carbon Emissions and Remote Work at a Large University System
Abstract
We report on an analysis of carbon emissions from commuting to a large multi-campus university system, Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. This is derived from a campus survey to assess carbon emissions and various attitudes towards sustainability across a variety of domains. We report findings on carbon emissions associated with driving to the respective campuses and the modes used and perform an analysis of the potential effect of changing the university’s remote work policy for staff. We find, unsurprisingly, that mandating additional days in the office increases commuting emissions.
