Safe Driving for Life: Mature Drivers Resource Center

June 25, 2026

Mature Drivers New Jersey Older drivers are often safer drivers. There comes a point, however, when physical or cognitive limitations may contribute to unsafe driving.

Added to this, older drivers are more likely to be severely injured or killed when a crash occurs.

The Mature Drivers Resource Center, an initiative of the Alan M. Voorhees Transportation Center, provides resources and training on safe driving techniques for mature drivers, guidance for starting the conversation when an older driver needs to limit or stop driving, and mobility options for those who have stepped away from driving.

These resources contribute to safer streets for vulnerable road users and fewer crashes involving mature drivers statewide.

“Driving is a complex activity that requires a variety of high-level cognitive skills that can diminish through changes that occur with normal aging and/or as a result of other age-related factors.” — NJ DHTS Highway Safety Plan 2021

With good planning and a little research, the transition to driving less can go smoothly. Visit maturedriversnj.org for tips on adapting to physical and cognitive changes that come with aging, and preparing to retire from driving while still maintaining safe mobility for life.

This project is supported by the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety and the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration.
