Now Accepting Applications for 2017 JPER Writing Workshop for New Scholars

February 14, 2017

The editors of the Journal of Planning Education and Research (JPER) will host the annual JPER Writing Workshop for New Scholars on July 17-19, 2017, at the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick, NJ. Our goal is to improve the quality of written scholarship among new faculty of planning and related academic programs. The workshop is intended for recent Ph.D. recipients (or candidates graduating in Spring 2017) in urban planning, urban studies, and closely related fields. Untenured assistant professors also are eligible to participate.

The program will include sessions on the writing and publication process, with intensive small-group work on participants’ own manuscripts. Selected participants are required to submit an article-length paper (about 30 double-spaced pages) by April 29, 2017. The paper will go through a mock peer review process by three referees. These reviews and additional feedback from faculty and fellow participants will be the basis for small-group discussions during the workshop. Please direct questions on the workshop program and paper requirement to Karen Lowrie, Managing Editor (jper@acsp.org).

Applicants who have been accepted for the workshop will be notified by JPER staff by March 25, 2017. Detailed information about accommodations will be provided at that time. Up to 20 applicants will be selected.

Applications are due by March 14, 2017. Please submit to jper@acsp.org electronically in Word or pdf, labeled with “Last Name-JPER-2016” the documents listed below.

Please combine the four documents below into one file for submission.

  1. Cover letter stating research interests and scholarly goals
  2. Application form (PDF)
  3. Current curriculum vitae
  4. A letter of recommendation from a department chair or dissertation advisor

There is no registration fee for participants. Participants are responsible for travel to/from New Brunswick, NJ. Overnight accommodations (for July 17 and 18) will be provided at the Hyatt Regency, New Brunswick, NJ (http://newbrunswick.hyatt.com). Breakfast (July 17 and 18), lunch (July 17 and 18), and an evening social event (July 17) are provided by JPER. Dinner on July 18 is on your own. Those participants who wish to have a single room must make specific arrangements with the hotel, and will be responsible for the incremental cost above that of sharing a room.
