Bloustein undergraduates learn project management while giving back to community organizations

December 23, 2018

As part of the fall 2018 Leadership Seminar classes, more than 250 Bloustein School undergraduates gave back to the community for the holiday season by doing public service projects for a wide range of community organizations and agencies throughout the New Brunswick area. The Leadership Seminar course is required for students majoring in public health, health administration, or public policy that are planning on taking a 6-credit professional practice internship at the Bloustein School. The core focus of the course is to provide students the opportunity to gain the skills required for leadership including collaboration, professionalism, and project management.

Student teams were asked to assist or join an agency or organization for a community/public service project. In addition to serving as an opportunity for students to learn project management and team building first hand, the assignment really taught students how giving back is what really makes for a strong leader. Some of the agencies the students served included Women Aware, Embrace Kids Foundation Thanksgiving, Big Chill Rutgers 5k, Hands of Hope for the Community Inc., Winter Wishes (RUPA and PAB), Start Out Fresh Intervention Services (SOFIA), Bristol Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital Holiday, Greeting Cards, SHILO (Supporting Homeless Innovatively Loving Others), Rutgers Food Pantry, Saint Peter’s University Hospital Operation Smile, Children’s Specialized, and Elijah’s Promise.

Thanks to all of our students who provided photos from their service project experiences.
