Congressman Rush Holt, CEO of AAAS, to present "Advancing Science-Informed Policy in Today’s Political Climate" on March 6

February 20, 2019

Congressman Rush D. Holt, Ph.D., CEO of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and former U.S. Representative, New Jersey’s 12th congressional district (1999-2015), will present the annual Ruth Ellen Steinman and Edward J. Bloustein Memorial Lecture, “Advancing Science-Informed Policy in Today’s Political Climate,” on Tuesday, March 5 at the Bloustein School’s Governor James J. Florio Special Events Forum.

Please be advised this event was not recorded.

Nearly every public decision has science embedded somewhere in it, and scientific evidence can be used to illuminate it. Communicating evidence so that it will be used is challenging in these times when there is no distinction among evidence, opinion, and ideological assertion. A new approach at AAAS is to bring evidence to bear on decision holder promise.

Holt became chief executive officer of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and executive publisher of the Science family of journals in February 2015. In this role, Holt leads the world’s largest multi-disciplinary scientific and engineering society. Over his career, Dr. Holt has held positions as a teacher, scientist, administrator, and policymaker. From 1987 to 1998, Holt was assistant director of the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL), a Department of Energy national lab, one of the largest alternative energy research facilities in the country. Holt then served for 16 years as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, representing New Jersey’s 12th Congressional District. Holt is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Carleton College and holds M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in physics from New York University.

The Ruth Ellen Steinman Bloustein and Edward J. Bloustein Memorial Lecture was established to honor the memory of these two extraordinary individuals. For nearly nineteen years, the Blousteins dedicated their enormous energies to Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. The fund was established in 1988 after Ruth Ellen died following a long and heroic battle with illness. Sadly, there was cause to broaden the purpose of the fund a year later when Edward Bloustein, Rutgers’ beloved president, died suddenly in December of 1989.
