Bloustein School MHA program earns CAHME accreditation

February 25, 2021

One of the Bloustein School’s newest graduate degrees, the Master of Health Administration, has been awarded accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME).

To earn CAHME accreditation, the school participated in a 2-year evaluation process to show that the MHA is of the highest quality and meets certain standards. During the evaluation period the school submitted information about the MHA’s purpose, curriculum, student experience and information about the success of its graduates. Since a site visit was not possible, program faculty produced a 10-minute narrated video to capture the highlights of the school and its facilities, the university, and the school’s relationship with healthcare organizations across the state of New Jersey and in New York.

“We are fortunate to call New Brunswick—known as “The Healthcare City”—our home,” said Ray Caprio, Ph.D., University Professor and Director of Master of Health Administration programs. “Johnson & Johnson Worldwide Headquarters is just downtown. Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital New Brunswick/RWJBarnabas Health and St. Peter’s University Hospital also make New Brunswick their home, as do a wide array of small biotech firms and other healthcare startups. We are in the perfect location for the MHA program to be successful.”

The school will be required to submit periodic self-studies followed by review of an outside panel of experts in order to remain a CAHME-accredited program.

The accreditation review report noted the strong collaborative environment and the high level of administrative and financial support between the Bloustein School and the Master of Health Administration program. In addition, the reviewers believe that extensive use of practitioner-based faculty to connect theory to practice is a strength of the program.

“Achieving accreditation in such a short period of time—and during a pandemic—reflects the hard work and commitment the Bloustein School’s faculty and staff have contributed in the past several years,” Dr. Caprio continued. “I must also acknowledge and thank our student leadership, our student body, and alumni for their interest in, support of, and contributions to our program. The CAHME review team made specific note of the strength of support expressed by our students which, I am sure, contributed mightily to the final outcome.”

“The Bloustein School’s Master of Health Administration program is producing tomorrow’s healthcare leaders. Achieving CAHME accreditation is a testimony to not only our strong curriculum,” said Piyushimita (Vonu) Thakuriah, PhD, Distinguished Professor and Dean of the Bloustein School. “But also of our commitment to providing a health management education that is challenging, dynamic, and rewarding for our students.”

The Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education is the accrediting body for graduate programs in healthcare management in the United States and Canada. It serves the public interest by advancing the quality of healthcare management education.
