Software for Students
This page provides information on software used in courses at the Bloustein School.
*Please be aware that software licensing can and does change. This page is updated regularly to reflect any changes to the licensing for the software packages commonly used in our courses.
Software in Alphabetic order
Adobe Creative Suite
The Bloustein School and OIT have the Adobe Creative Suite software installed in the computer labs and a site license for the entire Rutgers community is in place. This allows you to use the software in the labs and to install the software on personally owned computers. In order to use the software, you need to setup your account. You can find information on setting up your account here.
Anti-Virus
Members of the Rutgers community are encouraged to use the following anti-virus software on personally owned computers:

Bitdefender is available for Windows based machines
- Avira is available for Macs
ArcGIS Desktop
- Students can use ArcGIS Desktop in the Bloustein School and Rutgers OIT computer labs.
- Students can obtain ArcGIS Desktop and the license required for installing the software on personally owned windows based machines. This software is available through the Rutgers Software Portal and can be found here.
- Mac users who want to install the software would need to install an instance of Windows on their systems using bootcamp. This will require at least 60GB of free hard drive space. Information about that process can be found on the Rutgers Software portal ArcGIS page.
ArcGIS Online Services and ArcGIS Pro
- Students can use ArcGIS Pro through the Bloustein School and Rutgers OIT computer labs.
- In order to use ArcGIS Online services, or ArcGIS Pro, you will need to create an account through the Rutgers ArcGIS Online site or through ArcGIS Pro if you already have it installed. You can find instructions on creating your account here.
- If you want to download ArcGIS Pro, you can sign into the Rutgers ArcGIS Online site provided that you have already created your account. After logging in, at the top of the page, click your username on the top right and then click My Settings. On the My Settings page, select licenses and on the left you should see the option to download ArcGIS Pro.
- Mac users who want to install the software would need to install an instance of Windows on their systems using bootcamp. This will require at least 60GB of free hard drive space. Information about that process can be found on the Rutgers Software portal ArcGIS page.
AutoCAD
AutoCAD is available in the Bloustein School computer labs. Students taking a course that uses the software will be assigned a license. If you are not taking such a course and need access to the software, please contact us at help@ejb.rutgers.edu. For your personally owned computer, you can get AutoCAD software here.
Box
We recommend that students use Google Drive for cloud based file storage. You can also use Box for cloud based file storage. To do so, use the sign-up link on this page. You can then install the Box Drive software from here.
EndNote
EndNote is a citation management software package. It is available in the Bloustein School computer labs. Students can also get a copy to install on personally owned computers here.
Google Drive
Google Drive is available to you as part of Scarletapps. We recommend using this service for your cloud based file storage and recommend using Google Drive File Stream to access your files. LinkedIn Learning
Members of the Rutgers community have access to LinkedIn Learning. For more information, please see this page.
Lumion
Lumion is rendering software. The Lumion Pro Student version is free and you can find out more about it here. This software package is not installed by default in our facilities, but may be installed on specific machines based on requests from students or professors.
Microsoft Office
All active Rutgers students are entitled to a subscription for Office 365. You can find more details about how to get the software here. Student workers who have Connect accounts will need to use that account to access Office. Please be aware that you’ll need an active Rutgers Microsoft account to use this software in our computer labs.
Minitab
The Bloustein School has licensed Minitab for specific courses. Licenses are assigned to the students taking those courses at the start of each semester. If you are taking such a course and have not received a license, or need to use the platform for other courses or projects, please contact us.
NVivo
NVivo is qualitative data analysis software available in the Bloustein School computer lab. It is also available to students to install on personally owned machines and you can obtain that software here.
Qualtrics Survey Platform
You can use Qualtrics to create surveys provided that they are related to the university’s educational mission and organizational goals. For more information, please see this link.
QGIS
QGIS is an open source GIS software program used by some EJB courses. You can find out more about QGIS here.
R
R is a free software environment for statistical computing and graphics. RStudio is an integrated development environment for R. R and a free version of RStudio are available in both the Bloustein School and OIT computer labs and are available for installation on personally owned devices. You can download a free version of R from here. A free version of R Studio can be downloaded from here.
Rhino
Rhino is 3D modeling software used in graphics courses at the Bloustein school. The software is available in the Bloustein School computer labs and as part of our licensing solution for Rhino, it can be used on personal devices as well. Students using this software in their courses will receive information about how to access the software. If you are a Bloustein School student who is not enrolled in a course using the software, but need to use it, please contact us. Students can also download a fully functional evaluation version of Rhino to install on personally owned computers. That evaluation version can be used for up to 90 days and can be found here.
SketchUp
Sketchup is a 3D modeling software package used in some Bloustein School courses. Sketchup has a free web based version for personal use. The version used at the Bloustein School is the Pro version and it is available in the Bloustein School computer labs. If you’re interested in using the free version, which is restricted to non commercial use only, you can find it here. If you would like to purchase your own student license of Sketchup Pro, you can find details on purchasing the software here.
SPSS
SPSS can be accessed or obtained in a number of ways:
- SPSS is accessible in the Bloustein School and Rutgers OIT computer labs
- You can obtain a license for SPSS to install on your own computer. Here are some options:
- Purchase a copy through an IBM sanctioned reseller. One benefit of buying the software from such a reseller is that most of the resellers offer 6 month licenses. Here is a link to a list of resellers:

As an example, On the hub offers 6 month licenses for $40 Windows and Mac. - Purchase a license from Rutgers. The software license expires each year on 7/1 and is not pro-rated. This means that you can buy the software in September or in May and it will cost the same amount, but you will have a much different period of time to use the software. The software license costs $100 and can be found here.
- IBM also provides a free 14 day trial version of SPSS and that can be found here: https://www.ibm.com/products/spss-statistics

Stata
Stata is accessible through the Bloustein School and Rutgers OIT computer labs
A copy of the software can also be purchased through the Stata GradPlan. You can get a 6 month license of the program for $48 here:

Tableau
Tableau is software used for analytics, reporting, and visualization. It is available in the Bloustein School computer labs. You can also obtain a one year license for the software to install on personally owned computers from here: https://www.tableau.com/academic/students
V-RAY
V-Ray is rendering software integrated with our Rhino 3D modeling software. The software is available in the Bloustein School computer lab.

Zotero
Zotero is a tool used for citation and research management. The software is available in the Bloustein School computer labs. It is also freely available and can be found here:
